Report from the Director General of the Oficina Española de Patentes y Marcas (OEPM)
Candidature presentation
Dr. Celia Sánchez-Ramos is proposed as candidate for a Prince of Asturias Award in the field of Technical and Scientific Research by the Oficina Española de Patentes y Marcas (OEPM). Alberto Casado, Director of the OEPM, describes the motives for promoting this candidature:

This brief report describes the professional career and the outstanding achievements and inventions of Dr. Celia Sánchez-Ramos.

Through her research on the Visual System, Dr. Celia Sánchez Ramos has filed numerous patents approved in over 140 countries and developed several products of worldwide use to modern day society: inventions designed to prevent blindness, for the early detection of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, to improve driving safety and a personal identification system.

Dr. Celia Sánchez-Ramos forms part of a new wave of Spanish scientists who stress the need to change our current way of disseminating scientific knowledge by prioritizing data publication in the form of patents followed by reporting these findings in specialized journals.

Her goal is to make sure that any invention that provides a social service will reach the entire population. Thus, the patented finding can be marketed and, in this way, will quickly become of generalized use. The idea is that patents expedite the application of knowledge to specific products and, besides guaranteeing their efficacy and validity, they certify the novelty and utility of new developments.

In 2011 we will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of our Law of Patents, and for one of our most international inventors, the Prince of Asturias Award would be the best way of commemorating this milestone in the development of Industrial Property in Spain.

Hence, for the first time in the history of this institution we propose the presentation of a candidature to these prestigious awards in the category of Technical and Scientific Research. For us, the candidature of Dr. Celia Sánchez-Ramos is an obvious choice since she has always promulgated the importance of protecting Industrial Property for the scientific community and society as a whole.

We consider that by integrating her research, inventive and enterprising capacity, Dr. Celia Sánchez-Ramos has made it possible for her discoveries and inventions “to reach society and give rise to a universal improvement in health and quality of life”. This intent is summarized in a simple sentence: Dr. Celia Sánchez-Ramos, "Looking out for all of us".

Finally, we would like to stress that at the OEPM we feel that her capacity to offer previously unthinkable solutions for scientific and social advance at the international level deserves the recognition and support of those of us who wish that such far-reaching initiatives continue to emerge and spread. For all these reasons, we support this candidature with optimism and confidence.
